After our discussion on vinegar wash for fruits and veggies last week, I was curious to test the effectiveness of the wash.
Would my produce taste like vinegar? Would it stay crisp longer? I just had to find out! So, after my Sprouts trip last Tuesday, I prepared a produce bath in my kitchen sink.
I filled my sink up about 1/3 of the way with cool water, and added 1/2 cup of vinegar and 1 tablespoon of salt. I used this recipe as a guideline. The winners of the lucky produce spa package were: organic romaine and red leaf lettuce, organic strawberries, organic blueberries, and red grapes. They were were all very excited to be chosen!
I allowed the produce to enjoy their soak for about 30 minutes. I then set the produce on a couple of clean towels on the counter. After the soak, my sink looked like this:
See all those spots and flakes? Grody to the max! Needless to say, the wash removed a lot of grossness that we would have otherwise eaten.

The white film that’s normally found on grapes – gone! The lettuce was fresh and crisp.
How long did the produce last? The grapes were left on the counter, and lasted about three days, which is normal for our house. They started getting wrinkly on day four.
The strawberries were still fresh when I used them three days later. And no vinegar or salty taste whatsoever!
The blueberries were still firm and delicious six days after the wash.
The romaine lettuce was used three days after the soak, and the red lettuce was used four days later. Both heads of lettuce were crisp. Bonus for the lettuce – because I washed it beforehand, all I had to do was chop it up. No salad spinner necessary!
The final report: I will definitely use the wash for all produce from now on. It cleaned my fruits and veggies beautifully, and helped them stay fresh longer.
